World War 1 and the Men of Montgomeryshire
11/09/2014 - 31/12/2014
The Canal Wharf
2014 is the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War and museums and other relevant organisations all over Britain and on the continent will be commemorating this event.
Powysland Museum is planning an exhibition on the war for each year until 2018 with displays covering various aspects including propaganda, the trench-war and the home front.
For the 2014 exhibition the museum is focusing on the people of Montgomeryshire especially the soldiers from the area who fought and in some cases died in what they then called The Great War. This will especially include the campaigns and actions of the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry, but will also comprise local men from other regiments as well as photographs of unknown servicemen from the area.
The displays will be based on the museum’s own collection of war memorabilia and objects, but it is planned that the 2018 exhibition will give local people an opportunity to lend relevant items to the museum thus ensuring that hitherto hidden stories about local men are made accessible to a wider audience.
