THE ROYAL WELCH FUSILIERS AND THE GREAT CHRISTMAS TRUCE, 1914 – 1915
National Assembly for Wales
08/11/2016 6:00pm - 08/11/2016 8:00pm
Elin Jones AM, Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales, invites you to join her in welcoming Lieutenant-General Jonathon Riley to the Senedd for the third annual lecture to commemorate the centenary since the First World War.
Lieutenant-General Riley is a former British Army field commander, an author, speaker and military historian.
This year’s lecture will explore a forgotten story. The most detailed accounts of the famous 1914 Christmas Truce come from the 2nd Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers. However, the less well-known second truce at Christmas 1915 is often overlooked. Here, again, a Royal Welch battalion was involved in this truce and can give us their account of what took place. This lecture will bring the two truces to life, through the eyes of the Welsh officers and men involved – among them writers who have given us some of the best-known accounts of that time, as well as recently uncovered diarists.
