During the Christmas of 1914 a series of unofficial ceasefires occurred along the Western Front in Europe. Soldiers from both sides of the war met in No Man’s Land; they shared stories, tokens of friendship, they even played a football. This extraordinary event never happened again.
‘The Christmas Truce 1914 – and beyond’ explores a truce that took place between members of the Royal Welch Fusiliers and the Royal Saxon Regiment. With an overarching theme of peace and reconciliation, the exhibition also examines other aspects of trench life such as dark humour, art and poetry, with an additional section on unexpected ways the war impacted on life at home.
The exhibition is a partnership between museums and archives in Wales and Germany, supported by CyMAL and The Dulverton Trust.
