Big Pit National Coal Museum is launching the latest edition of its annual people’s history magazine, GLO, on Monday 4th August, 3pm-4pm, at the Amgueddfa Cymru stand (number 611-612) at the National Eisteddfod, Llanelli.
The launch will be attended by John Griffiths AM, Minister for Natural Resources, Culture and Sport who said, “I’m pleased to launch this edition of GLO as part of Amgueddfa Cymru’s commemoration of the First World War. Coal was central to the war effort, not only in keeping people warm but poweringindustry, railways and shipping. The human cost that was extracted along with the coal must never be forgotten”.
This edition of GLO, entitled When Dai became Tommy – The Welsh miner at war during 1914-18 tells the stories of some of the Welsh miners who fought during the First World War, and also the role of the welsh miners who became ‘tunnelers’ during the war – a largely forgotten part of the war where the Welsh played a prominent role.
