“Why should we not sing in this Great War?” singing in wartime – a Welsh perspective.
Inspired by a speech Lloyd George made at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 1916, Ifor ap Glyn will outline the basis for the viewpoint that singing was unseemly in wartime, the efforts made to counter it by translating suitably patriotic songs like ‘Tipperary’ into Welsh, and how Welsh hymns were often far more popular amongst men from a chapel-going culture.
In Welsh with simultaneous translation to English.
